Confirmation and Swear-In of Comm Dev Positions

Senate Chair David Warne invited the candidates to the front of the room to introduce themselves and state why they are interested in the position.

Yash Tanna: Hi I’m Yash, I am a sophomore at SCU. I am going for the Academic Chair for ASG. I was in ASG last year, so I am aware of the responsibilities. I want to help out with first years and make sure they transition well. I am in charge of Last Lecture and Welcome to Finals Week.

Junior Senator Zachary Meade: Do you have any specific goals for this year?

Yash: Yes, I am trying to do something around midterms. Obviously not this quarter but I’m trying to see if we can do something for winter or spring quarter.

Shivani: Hi my name is Shivani. I am a first year. I am a business major and I am going to be the First Year Community Development Chair. I want to ease the transition between high school and college as well as make SCU a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone here. My as a co-chair and my other co-chair will help bring this together in making this transition better and holding events throughout the year.

At-Large Senator Allie Bare: What would your ideal event look like?
Shivani: A very inclusive event where I use input from the first years to accommodate towards what they want to see in an event. I would use surveys and input from first years that I know. I want more of an inclusive event that has to do with games and inter-RLC communications. Much of the communication now is only among the RLC that you’re in.

Senior Senator Raaghav Kanodia: What ways do you think you can ease the transition?

Shivani: Specifically, I have found issues within the first week of school. The main

issue that I found was the ease into college. The activities were not sufficient enough for first years to make friends. There are RLC events, but I want to branch those out, so first years meet as many people as possible.

Senate Chair David Warne, hearing no more questions, asked the candidates to leave the room. Following their departure, he asked the Senate for questions, comments, or concerns regarding the candidates. Hearing no comments or concerns, Senate Chair David Warne asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was given by At-Large Senator Allie Bare and seconded by Junior Senator Kyle Andrews. The motion to vote was given by Junior Senator Amber Wang and seconded by Senior Senator Erik Echeona. Pro-Tempore Cat Bick took roll and the candidates were confirmed.

Confirmation of DPC Committee Candidate

Senate Chair David Warne invited the candidate to the front of the room to introduce herself and state why she is interested in the position.

Ellie Lewis: Good evening, my name is Ellie. I am applying for DPC because I want to be involved with the city planning process at SCU. Vidya and I have been working on things together like the scroll and Mountain Mikes. Just last night we were at City Hall preparing our scroll. We are going to input all the answers into an Excel spreadsheet so they can hear what the students want. Another important part of this role is organizing people’s wants for the future and setting meets for focus groups with urban planners.

Senate Chair David Warne asked if there were any questions for the candidate.

Junior Senator Zachary Meade: How often do you plan meetings with city council?
Ellie: About once a month for the role. But for city council, there isn’t a schedule. We are going to City Hall on the twelfth.

Senior Senator Raaghav Kanodia: What is the timeline?
Ellie: It is really long. The planning is going to be done in ten years. And then building will probably take another ten years. This downtown committee is going to exist for a long time.

Senior Senator Vidya Pingali: Doesn’t the construction begin in 2022?

Ellie: Yes, begins.

At-Large Senator Allie Bare: Is it possible to add bowling to the scroll?

Ellie: I think people put bowling alley. So, it is on there.

Senate Chair David Warne, hearing no more questions, asked the candidate to leave the room. Following her departure, he asked the Senate for questions, comments, or concerns regarding the candidate.

Junior Senator Mika Philip: I’m confused as to why Senate has to vote on this. What is this position going under?
David: It is managed by the Office of Student Life and delegated to us to confirm.

Senior Senator Raaghav Kanodia: Who will that committee be accountable to?

Ellie: This is a committee who has people who live in the neighborhood, city officials, and university officials.

Hearing no more comments or concerns, Senate Chair David Warne asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was given by At-Large Senator Allie Bare and seconded by Senior Senator Erik Echeona. Pro-Tempore Cat Bick took roll and the candidate was confirmed.

Senate Chair David Warne invited the candidates for Comm Dev back to the front of the room to be sworn in by Chief Justice Emily Yekikian.

RSO Voting

Junior Senator Kyle Andrews: So, recapping the RSOs, SAC’s recommendation for Kindness Campaign is yes if they aren’t passing any boundaries. It is a yes for the Ski Club, there is no more conflict of interest issue. We want to postpone the Southeast Student Association. They just met with Jenn from MCC and they might apply as a different club. We recommend yes on SCU Vibes and Red

Cross Club. And we want to postpone Developer Student Club SCU. Any questions?

At-Large Senator Allie Bare: Has anything changed about SCU Vibes?
Kyle: We asked Luke to tell us how they are structurally different from Fun Club. The difference is pretty big.

At-Large Senator Allie Bare: Any substantial things they are going to do? Kyle: Yes. Luke can touch on it better.

Sophomore Senator Luke Paulson: Kyle asked me for three specific ideas. One is a speaker series. The other is a town hall to get student feedback. The third is an alumni panel regarding the traditions of Santa Clara and how we are such a special place and keeping the culture alive.

Senior Senator Raaghav Kanodia: Can you talk about the Kindness Club?

Kyle: We were mainly worried they were talking about financial aid. And we wanted to make sure they are talking to the right officers and giving out correct information.

First Year Senator Theo Lassen: Is Red Cross Club planning to do blood drives with SCAAP?
Kyle: We don’t have an answer for that.

At-Large Senator Allie Bare: I think the potential issue for that is that people can only donate so many times a year. So not that many people will come.

Junior Senator Zachary Meade: On that same point, is the University aware that they want to do events like that?
Kyle: CSI would have cleared that they have gotten all the requirements. They have other events outside of blood drives as well.

Sophomore Senator Abby Alvarez: I did mention it to Kennedy who is the head of the SCAAP blood drive, and she said she is happy to work on it.

At-Large Senator Allie Bare: I was wondering what Kennedy said about it/ Abby: She said they could collaborate.

Senate Chair David Warne: So, postpone Southeast Asian and Student Developer Club? Can I get a motion to vote? At-Large Senator Allie Bare gave the motion to vote and At-Large Senator Duncan McDonnell seconded the motion. All in favor of postponing Southeast Asian Club and Developer Student Club? Ok, so we will postpone those.

Junior Senator Kyle Andrews: So, the remaining are Ski Club, Red Cross Club, and SCU Vibes.

The motion to white ballot was given by Senior Senator Erik Echeona and seconded by At-Large Senator Allie Bare. Ok, the ayes have it. The motion to vote was given by Senior Senator Erik Echeona and seconded by Sophomore Senator Justin Chan.
