Minutes of the SCU Student Senate Meeting October 18th, 2018

1. CALL TO ORDER

Senate Chair Alex Perlman called the October 18th, 2018 meeting of the Santa Clara

University Student Senate to order at 7:02 pm in the Benson Memorial California Mission

Room.

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked Junior Senator Avery James to recite the invocation.

2. ROLL CALL

Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri took roll at 7:02 pm.

3. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the Senate to consider the agenda for the current meeting.

He requested questions and comments related to the agenda. Hearing none, he asked for a

motion to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved by Sophomore Senator Kyle

Andrews and seconded by At-large Senator Eduardo Ruano .

4. APPROVAL OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the Senate to consider the previous meeting minutes and

requested questions and comments related to the minutes. Hearing none, he asked for a

motion to approve the minutes. The motion was made by Junior Senator Vidya Pingali and

seconded by Junior Senator Mika Philip .

5. SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS:

Community Development Appointments Discussion and Vote

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the candidates to come in front of the Senate and introduce

themselves. Senate Chair Alex Perlman then asked the senators if they had any questions for

the candidates.

Sophomore Senator Sahil Sagar : What previous positions have you held that qualify you for

these positions?

Answer: High school student government

Junior Senator Vidya Pingali : What initiates would you like to take on at SCU?

Answer: I would like to take on projects which bring first-years together to help them get to

know each other better.

Junior Senator Shivani Gohil : Do you have any examples?

Answer: Freshman Fridays once a month.

Hearing no more questions Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the candidates to step out of

the room while the senators discussed and voted.

Senate Chair Alex Perlman then opened the floor for discussion.

Senior Senator Kayla Williams : I did student government with her in high school and she is a

wonderful candidate.

At-large Senator Rory Pankkuk motioned to vote. Senior Senator Rachel Wiggins seconded

the motion. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri took roll, the motion passed and the vote was

approved, Senate Chair Alex Perlman invited the candidates back into the room to be sworn

in by Cheif Justice Jack Larkin.

Senate leadership activity

Judicial Nominees

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the candidates to come in front of the Senate and introduce

themselves. Senate Chair Alex Perlman then asked the senators if they had any questions for

the candidates.

Junior Senator David Warne: Why do you want to be on Judicial?

Rob: I am interested in politics and law and I know this will be a good experience.

Cat: I had served as the court clerk which has been a good experience; however, I think this will

be a more hands-on position.

At-large senator Rory Pankkuk : What would you like to do with these positions?

Cat: I want to make the bylaws more clear.

Rob: I think the concise wording is very important.

Hearing no more questions Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the candidates to step out of

the room while the senators discussed and voted.

Senior Senator Kayla Williams motioned to white ballot and At-Large Senator Eduardo

Ruano seconded the motion. Senior Senator Rachel Wiggins motioned to vote and

Sophomore Senator Robbie Nunes second the motion. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri took

roll, the motion passed and the vote was approved, Senate Chair Alex Perlman invited the

candidates back into the room to be sworn in by Cheif Justice Jack Larkin.

UPC & Task Force Appointments Discussion and Vote

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the candidates, Eoin Lyons, and Shivani Gohil, to come in

front of the Senate and introduce themselves. Senate Chair Alex Perlman then asked the

senators if they had any questions for the candidates.

Sophomore Senator Ciara Moezidis : Can you give an explanation of these positions.

Eoin: This position focuses on student life, at large, and specifically how we can improve the

day to day life of Santa Clara students.

Shivani: This position focuses on misconduct on campus. It acts as an advocate and ally for

students. They come to us to talk about the things they are going through.

Hearing no more questions Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked the candidates to step out of

the room while the senators discussed and voted.

Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews motioned to white ballot and At-large Senator Eduardo

Ruano seconded the motion. First-Year Senator Justin Chan motioned to vote and Sophomore

Senator Robbie Nunes seconded the motion. Por Tempore Mary Balestreri took roll, the

motion passed and the vote was approved, Senate Chair Alex Perlman invited the candidates

back into the room to be sworn in by Cheif Justice Jack Larkin.

6. NEW BUSINESS

Bylaw review

Senate Chair Alex Perlman invited Chief Justice Jack Larkin to present the bylaw pertaining

to the online location of senate recordings to the Senate. Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked

for any questions or comments.

Sophomore Senator Sahil Sagar: Should the URL go in the bylaw?

Chief Justice Jack Larkin : That has been discussed; we were thinking about keeping the

wording more general.

First-year Senator Justin Chan motioned to vote and Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews

seconded the motion. Por Tempore Mary Balestreri took roll, the motion passed and the vote

was approved.

7.EXECUTIVE UPDATES

Public Relations

● Send in a request for Bronco News at least 2 weeks in advance. Bystander intervention

training is coming up, and working on a tenant rights flyer with judicial.

Community Development

● Tabling for voter registration, Walkabout is happening on Sunday, October 30th is the

new measures forum.

Finance

● 25% of our the budget has been spent. Send in all invoices and receipts.

Chief Justice

● There are new judicial members, mesher with Comm coming up.

Vice President

● ASG retreat is from October 26th-28th

President

● Talk to those who attended the meeting with the Presidential Search Committee to

gauge their feeling towards the meeting.

8.COMMITTEE UPDATES

COMM

● The conversation with Unity went well. Having a Mesher with judicial. Bystander

intervention is coming up.

CUIC

● Red Cup Pick up this week with FOC, Bronco Posi covers are finished. Working on LSB

diversity forum. VTA smart pass.

FOC

● Noticed that there is no longer or a piano or acia machine in Benson. Working on

turning the Pony Express to a smoothie truck. Red Cup pickup with CUIC this Sunday.

SAC

● More +1,000s in week 6. Society of Women Engineers received 71.7% of their requested

amount totaling $2,380.

Senate Chair Alex Perlman asked if there were any questions regarding the request.

First-year Senator Haiwad Haider: What is the SC fund?

Junior Senator David Warne : The SC fund comes from donors.

Vice President Jahwala Johns : How did you come up with the price for lodging

Junior Senator David Warne : We essentially paid for only two rooms.

Senior Senator Kayla Williams motioned to vote and Sophomore Senator Ciara Moezidis

seconded the motion.
