Minutes of the SCU Student Senate Meeting May 31, 2018

1. CALL TO ORDER Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ called the May 31st, 2018 meeting of the Santa Clara University Student Senate to order at 7:05 pm in the Williman Room of Benson. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked a member to read the invocation. All returning Associated Student Government members recited the invocation.

2. ROLL CALL Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri ​took roll at 7:06 pm.

3. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Senate Chair Alex Perlman ​asked the Senate to consider the agenda for the current meeting. He requested questions and comments related to the agenda. Hearing none, he asked for a motion to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved by Junior Senator David Warne ​and seconded by Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews​.

4. APPROVAL OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES Senate Chair Alex Perlman ​asked the Senate to consider the previous week’s Meeting Minutes and requested questions and comments related to the minutes. Hearing none, he asked for a motion to approve the Minutes. The motion was made by Senior Senator Kayla Williams​ and seconded by At-Large Senator Rory Pannkuk​.

5. NEW BUSINESS Confirmation and Swear in of Class Senators Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited incoming seniors Eoin Lyons and Rachel Wiggins, and incoming junior Avery James, all of whom were elected class senators, to the front of the room and asked them to introduce themselves. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked if there were any questions for the candidates. Junior Senator David Warne: ​What past experiences do you have that qualify you for these position? Eoin Lyons: I have spend time on ASG as well as other committees and organizations at Santa Clara University. Rachel Wiggins: I have previously spent two years on Senate. Avery James: I was a sophomore senator and was an orientation leader. At-Large Senator Rory Pannkuk​: What are your goals for next year? Eoin Lyons: I would like to focus on the ethic of care and discernment at this school as well as improve upon the lack of conversation and listening among the students, the administration, and the university as a whole. Rachel Wiggins: I would like to work closely with other branches of Associated Student Government and Santa Clara University organizations to focus on sustainability within FOC and SCAP. Avery James: I have a on-going project which I would like to continue to pursue next year. It is bringing artwork to the construction fences. Senate Chair Alex Perlman,​ hearing no more questions asked the candidates to step out of the room. Following their departure he asked the senate for questions, comments, or concerns regarding the candidates. At-Large Senator Stephen Fraser: ​How many candidates do we pick? Senate Chair Alex Perlman​: Eoin Lyons and Rachel Wiggins are candidates for senior class, and Avery james is a candidate for the junior class. Sophomore Senator Robbie Nunes:​ All three of the candidates are very qualified. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​, hearing no more questions or concerns, asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was given by Junior Senator David Warne​ and seconded by At-Large Senator Rory Pannkuk.​ Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ then asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was given by Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews ​and seconded by Senior Senator Leif Allmeroth​. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri​ took roll and the candidates were confirmed. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited Eoin Lyons, Rachel Wiggins, and Avery James back into the front of the room to be sworn in by Judicial Pro-Tempore Maria Parker. Confirmation and Swear-in of CUIC & FOC Chairs Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited Senior Senator Eoin Lyons​ and Senior Senator Rachel Wiggins​ to the front of the room and asked them to introduce themselves. Senior Senator Eoin Lyons​ introduced himself as the candidate for CUIC ​Chair and Rachel Wiggins introduced herself as the candidate for FOC​ Chair. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked if there were any questions for the candidates. Junior Senator Mika Philip​: Could you please restate which committees you are hoping to chair? Senate Chair Alex Perlman​, hearing no more questions or concerns, asked the candidates to leave the room. Following their departure he asked the senate for questions, comments, or concerns regarding the candidates. Hearing none, Senate Chair Alex Perlman ​asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was given by Junior Senator David Warne and seconded by Sophomore Senator Sahil Sagar​. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ then asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was given by Junior Senator David Warne a​ nd seconded by Senior Senator Kayla Williams​. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri​ took roll and the candidates were confirmed. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited Eoin Lyons and Rachel Wiggins back to the front of the room to be sworn in by Judicial Pro-Tempore Maria Parker. Confirmation and Swear-in of VP of Community Development Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited candidate for VP of Community Development, Asa Sweetser, to the front of the room to introduce himself. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked if there were any questions for the candidates. Junior Senator Mika Philip​: As VP of Community Development are you planning on introducing new projects or improving the ones that are already in place? Asa Sweetser: We have split the Off-campus Chair position into two new positions because it proved to be too much for one person to oversee. However, this division will allow us to continue to expand. I hope to bring about tangible traditions that will last. I would like to bring in some new ideas, while also improving upon old ones. Following their departure he asked the senate for questions, comments, or concerns regarding the candidate. Hearing none, Senate Chair Alex Perlman ​asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was given by Junior Senator David Warne and seconded by Junior Senator Mika Philip​. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ then asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was given by Junior Senator David Warne ​and seconded by Senior Senator Kayla Williams​. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri​ took roll and the candidate was confirmed. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited Asa Sweetser back into the front of the room to be sworn in by Judicial Pro-Tempore Maria Parker. Confirmation and Swear-in of Community Development Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited candidates for Community Development, Malika Singh and Tarren Kramer to the front of the room to introduce themselves. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked if there were any questions for the candidates. Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews: What are your goals for this year? Tarren Kramer: I hope to continue to grow upon the foundation that I established this past year with CommDev, and to create long term goals and find solutions. Malika Singh: I want to increase the presence and acknowledgement of ASG in on-campus events. Junior Senator Malika Philip​: What past experience do you have that qualifies you for these positions? Tarren Kramer: I have experience with ASG, I am a peer advisor for the political science department, and I will be a Community Facilitator (CF) next Year. Malika Singh: I was on ASG this past year, I am a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and hold a leadership position within the fraternity, and I will also be working as a desk assistant in Sobrato Hall. VP of Finance Ben Rhodes​: Tarren, as recently named “Rookie of the Year”, what advice do you have for any new ASG members? Tarren Kramer: Persistance is hard, but do not get discouraged. The motion to white ballot was given by Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews​ and seconded by At-Large Senator ​Alejandro Sugerr​. Senate Chair Alex Perlman then asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was given by Senior Senator Kayla Williams ​and seconded by Sophomore Senator Ciara Moezidis​. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri​ took roll and the candidates were confirmed. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited Malika Singh and Taran Kramer back into the front of the room to be sworn in by Judicial Pro-Tempore Maria Parker. Confirmation and Swear-in of Public Relations Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited candidates for Public Relations, Courtney Davis, Elena Linardi, and Shelby White, to the front of the room to introduce themselves. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked if there were any questions for the candidates. Sophomore Senator Kyle Andrews​: What past experience do you have that qualifies you for these positions? Courtney Davis: I have a passion for film and I am familiar with the editing software that is used for Bronco News. Elena Linardi: I was on ASB in high school, I was president of my chapter of National Charity League, and I currently help put on social events for my sorority. Shelby White: I was on ASG this past year, and have been involved with a variety of organizations here at Santa Clara and want to bring all of these together this year. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​, hearing no more questions or concerns, asked the candidates to leave the room. Following their departure he asked the senate for questions, comments, or concerns regarding the candidates. Hearing none, Senate Chair Alex Perlman ​asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was given by Junior Senator David Warne and seconded by Senior Senator Rachel Wiggins​. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ then asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was given by At-Large Senator Stephen Fraser ​and seconded by Senior Senator Luke Martin-Resnick​. Pro-Tempore Mary Balestreri​ took roll and the candidates were confirmed. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ invited Courtney Davis, Elena Linardi, and Shelby White back into the front of the room to be sworn in by Judicial Pro-Tempore Maria Parker.

6.EXECUTIVE BRANCH UPDATES President Sam Pérez:​ I have 3 Updates. 1. I am meeting with the Board of Trustees tomorrow, I would like to touch base to see if the senators, you all, have anything you would like me to add to the conversation. If so, please reach out. 2. Can’t Thread a Moving Needle is being replaced and consent will be incorporated in the One Love workshop in the fall of each school year. If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out. 3. I had a meeting with athletics and the head of Ruff Riders to discuss the future of Ruff Riders and implementing a budget. Athletics and Ruff Riders are open to having more autonomy, and asked for a budget proposal. We want to create a sound proposal, so connect with student athletes and your constituents for feedback and ideas. If you want to be involved in this process, reach out. Sophomore Senator Ciara Moezidis​: What are you planning to ask at your meeting with the Board of Trustees? President Sam Pérez: ​I will bring up problems facing our campus such as mental health, campus climate, and political divisiveness, and I would like to discuss ways in which can address them and what we can do to help.

7. ANNOUNCEMENTS Committee Preferences Senate Chair Alex Perlman​: Please fill out the committee preference Google Form. Additionally, we will be having a meeting for all returning members after tonight's Senate, as well as a meeting to pick committees. Summer Send-off Senate Chair Alex Perlman​: I hope everyone has a great summer, and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

8. ADJOURNMENT Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Adjournment was approved by Senior Senator Kayla Williams​ and seconded by Junior Senator Avery James​. Senate Chair Alex Perlman​ called the May 31st, 2018 meeting of the Santa Clara University Senate to a close at 7:43 PM.
