5. SPECIAL ORDERS OF BUSINESS
Senate Speaker Jeanne Rosenberger - Vice Provost for Student Life
Senate Chair Aly Motzel invited Jeanne Rosenberger, Vice Provost for Student Life, to give a presentation on the progress and goals of new initiatives as they relate to SCU student life. She specifically focused on how SCU will handle a growing student body. Her presentation is succinctly summarized below:
The Division of Student Life includes:
Benson, Campus Rec, Career center, Center for Student Involvement, etc.
Addressing Support for Mental Health
Student groups have asked that we do more
We identified areas of improvement and have begun adrressing them
Training - 600 SCU community members are now trained in suicide prevention
SCU mobile app has been upgraded to have more information about mental health and campus services
We committed to be a JED campus
JED Campus is a company that assesses collages on their mental health support based on seven goals: develop life skills, promote social connectedness, identify students at risk, increase help-seeking behaviors, provide mental health and substance abuse services, follow crisis management procedure, and restrict access to potentially lethal means.
JED Campus assessed SCU and gave us ways to improve
They found that SCU doesn’t market our services well enough, we have a lack of relationship with greek life, we don’t have enough social spaces, and we don’t have a full time psychiatrist
We are now working to improve those areas by expanding suicide prevention training to 600 community members, creating more social spaces in our planned campus developments, restricting student access to lethal means, marketing our services through our student handbook and SCU mobile app, and by studying SCU’s relationship with greek life
Preparing for a larger student body
New dorm will open in fall of 2019, primarily for underclassmen
It will house just over 600 students
Will allow us to return lounges and alleviate triples in other dorms
Building the Bronco Atrium over the Bronco Patio outside of the Benson Cafeteria
It will be a glass enclosure over the patio
Building will start in a week, but will not affect student life and eating in Benson
A full remodel of benson will happen over Summer and be ready for Fall Quarter
We have built two sand volleyball courts and an outdoor fitness area near Malley Fitness Center
Replaced weight room equipment
Collaborative Projects
Bronco Bunker
Testing a nap pod program
Working on having lawn chairs
Public access printers
Inclusive restrooms
School spirit initiatives
Expanding QPR suicide prevention training for student leaders
Senate Chair Aly Motzel thanked Jeanne Rosenberger for her presentation and asked if there were any questions for her.
At-Large Senator Rahaima Choudhry: Have you thought about having an additional psychiatrist?
Jeanne Rosenberger: We just got approval to hire one full time. We have two interviews this month for that position.
Sophomore Senator Duncan McDonell: What did JED identify as problems?
Jeanne Rosenberger: They found that SCU doesn’t market our services well enough, we have a lack of relationship with greek life, we don’t have enough social spaces, and we don’t have a full time psychiatrist. They want us to have additional locations to counsel people and additional times. We also aren’t in a town with a downtown. There aren’t things that stay open late for students so there aren’t alternatives for students. Greek life appeared in four of the sections and they said that because we have have no relationship with greek life we have a missed opportunity.
At-Large Senator Mai Sinada: Is there a timeline for benson?
Jeanne Rosenberger: Will be completed for orientation for fall 2018 orientation
At-Large Senator Mai Sinada: Do the students have access to current mock-ups?
Jeanne Rosenberger: They did, but are not currently online, we will put them back up.
At- Large Senator Kayla Williams: Has admissions stated size for next incoming class?
Jeanne Rosenberger: I believe it is 1,350 students from high school, but I’m not sure about transfer. I can give Aly the exact number.
First Year Senator Robbie Nunes: What are some school spirit initiatives?
Jeanne Rosenberger: That falls more on the collaborative and ASG side. One example would be the golf cart we are working on.
Jeanne Rosenberger: I’ll leave my business card and I will meet with anyone if you have any more questions or ideas.
Senate Chair Aly Motzel thanked Jeanne Rosenberger for her presentation.

It asks how safe students feel on campus
80 percent feel safe on campus
