Minutes of the SCU Student Senate Meeting June 8, 2017

1. CALL TO ORDER

Senate Chair Aly Motzel called the June 8, 2017 meeting of the Santa Clara University Student Senate to order at 7:30 pm in the Williman Room.

 

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked a member to read the invocation. Junior Senator Rory Pannkuk recited the invocation.

 

2. ROLL CALL

Pro-Tempore Sam McNeal took roll at 7:35 pm.

 

3. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked the Senate to consider the agenda for the current meeting. She requested questions and comments related to the agenda. None were put forward, and the agenda was approved by Sophomore Senator David Warne and seconded by At-Large Senator Erik Echeona.

 

4. APPROVAL OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked the Senate to consider the agenda for the current meeting. She requested questions and comments related to the minutes. None were put forward, and the agenda was approved by Senior Senator Jelly Fuentes and seconded by Junior Senator Victoria Linares.

 

5. SPECIAL ORDERS OF BUSINESS

 

Swearing in of Senior Class Senators

Senate Chair Aly Motzel invited Gerome Yabut and Mayron Mulugeta to the center of the room and introduced them as appointed Senior Senators. They introduced themselves.

 

Junior Senator Victoria Linares: Why do you want to be on senate?

Gerome: I’ve spent my past three years at the MCC, but I’d like to have a greater reach through Senate.

Sophomore Senator David Warne: What are your plans for the year?

Mayron: I wanted to do more diverse work and hear a bigger voice from student body

Gerome: I want to work with director of MCC and have a farther reach on Senate.

 

Aly asked them to leave the room.

 

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was made by Sophomore Senator David Warne and seconded by At- Large Senator Erik Echeona. At-Large Senator Kayla Williams motioned to vote, which was seconded by Sophomore Senator David Warne. Pro-Tempore Sam McNeal took roll and Gerome Yabut and Mayron Mulugeta were confirmed.

 

6. EXECUTIVE BRANCH UPDATES

 

Public Relations VP Maggie Hurlbut announced that they are still looking for Marketing and Bronco News appointees.

 

Community Development VP Elena Radding would like to reach out to Senate for ideas for first year tradition. She also announced that there would be a City Government Workshop on Saturday.

 

Finance VP Ben Rhoades announced, regarding RSO reimbursement for next year, that within ten days of purchase the reimbursement needs to be turned in

 

Chief Justice Rachel Brooke Herzog asked that if anyone has any bylaw changes they want to let her know over this summer.

 

Vice President Sam Perez announced that the student debate last Monday went really well and had high attendance. She is working on platform items like mental health and others. She would like Senate and the student body to each out to her if they would like to help.

 

President Jack Herstam said he will be meeting with faculty to discuss tuition, off campus housing, and mental health. He met trustees last week and told them that it would be fantastic if they were more integrated into the events and conversations on campus. He would like them to speak on campus and write in the paper. He also announced that the tuition survey would be going out this Sunday.

 

7. NEW BUSINESS

 

Committee Chair Confirmation

Senate Chair Aly Motzel invited David Warne, Amy Monzon, Alex Perlman, and Jelly Fuentes to the center of the room and introduced them as the Chairpersons of SAC, COMM, FOC, and CUIC, respectively. They introduced themselves.

 

At-Large Senator John Ferrari: Why do you all want to be the heads of your respective committees?

Sophomore Senator David Warne: There is more to be done. I would like to make an RSO/ASG interface so they can interact

Senior Senator Amy Monzon: I’ve been on this committee for two years, but I did not achieve my goals yet. I want to make it more serious and have a bigger impact. I would like the Be Heard Desk to be more professional and have Senate wear their polos every other Friday. I would like to establish our professional brand.

Junior Senator Alex Perlman: I will lead by example and we will have regular meetings.

Senior Senator Jelly Fuentes: I’ve done two years on this committee and this year I want to work especially hard on current student issues.

 

Aly asked them to leave the room.

 

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked for a motion to white ballot. The motion to white ballot was made by At- Large Senator Erik Echeona and seconded by At- Large Senator Kayla Williams. At-Large Senator Bjorn Thyrring motioned to vote, which was seconded by Sophomore Senator Duncan McDonnell. Pro-Tempore Sam McNeal took roll and David Warne, Amy Monzon, Alex Perlman, and Jelly Fuentes were confirmed.

 

8. OLD BUSINESS

 

CommDev By-law Change Voting

Senate Chair Aly Motzel: The portion of the proposed bylaw change document containing examples of position duties has been cut out because they are subject to change, but they can be added later, if need be.

Community Development VP Elena Radding: We will go back at the end of the year to review them

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked for a motion to vote. The motion to vote was made by At-Large Senator Erik Echeona and was seconded by Sophomore Senator David Warne. Pro-Tempore Sam McNeal took roll and the bylaw change was approved.

 

Senate Chair Aly Motzel invited Tarren Kramer, Madi Given, and Tess Cartin to the center of the room and introduced them as the Scholastic Off-Campus Chair, Student Safety Off-Campus Chair, and Civic Engagement Off-Campus Chair, respectively. They introduced themselves.

 

Tarren: I’m from Arizona and both of my parents went here. I have a history here and I want to have an impact on SCU.

Madi: I’m from Washington and I’ll be a senior next year. I want to improve our relationships with the community and ensure that SCU students and the community we live in is safe.

Tess: I’m from Colorado and I’m a junior here at SCU. I’d like to help engage the SCU students with the Santa Clara community.

 

At-Large Senator Nithya Vemireddy: Will you be working with the communications office?

ANSWER: We will reach out to them.

 

Senior Senator Jelly Fuentes: Do you guys have any specific goals?

ANSWER: We want to be role models for the middle and elementary school students. We also want to get people more involved in student government. We want to make students feel safe and work closely with police and local government.

 

At-Large Senator Nithya Vemireddy: Will you work with child studies center and CSO’s and RSO’s?

ANSWER: Yes, they would be a great help to us.

 

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked for a motion white ballot. The motion to white ballot was made by Senior Senator Jelly Fuentes and was seconded by Sophomore Senator Duncan McDonnell. The motion to vote was made by Sophomore Senator David Warne and seconded by At- Large Senator Payton Swanson. Pro-Tempore Sam McNeal took roll and Tarren Kramer, Madi Given, and Tess Cartin were confirmed.

 

Tarren Kramer, Madi Given, and Tess Cartin were then sworn in to their respective positions.

 

9. OLD BUSINESS

At-Large Senator Kayla Williams: I served on CSIF, an organization that allocates money to student projects that deal with sustainability. I was also on the carbon neutrality task force. I will not be able to work on those two projects in the fall so reach out to me if you are interested.

 

Senate Chair Aly Motzel: If you have any suggestions for speakers let me know.

 

10. ROLL CALL

Pro-Tempore Sam McNeal took roll at 7:30 PM.

 

11. ADJOURNMENT

Senate Chair Aly Motzel asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Adjournment was approved by At-Large Senator Kayla Williams and seconded by Junior Senator Rory Pannkuk. Aly called the June 1, 2017 meeting of the Santa Clara University Senate to a close at 7:30 PM.
